Background of the study:
Infrastructural decay has emerged as a critical factor influencing urban crime dynamics in many Nigerian cities. In Ibadan North-East, deteriorating infrastructure—including dilapidated roads, poorly lit streets, and crumbling public facilities—has been linked to increased crime rates (Olaniyi, 2023). The decline in physical infrastructure not only signals economic neglect but also creates environments that are conducive to criminal activities. Urban decay can foster anonymity, reduce natural surveillance, and undermine community cohesion, thereby providing opportunities for criminal behavior to flourish (Akinyemi, 2024). This study examines how the decay of infrastructure in Ibadan North-East correlates with the prevalence of various crimes such as theft, vandalism, and gang activities. By integrating spatial analysis with crime statistics and resident surveys, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive assessment of the relationship between infrastructural conditions and public safety. The study also considers the role of government policies and resource allocation in maintaining urban infrastructure, arguing that investment in urban renewal may serve as a critical strategy for crime prevention. Through this multi-dimensional approach, the study aims to offer actionable recommendations for urban planners and policymakers to revitalize decaying areas and reduce crime.
Statement of the problem:
In Ibadan North-East, infrastructural decay has been identified as a key factor contributing to the rise in crime rates. Poorly maintained public facilities and inadequate urban planning have created conditions that criminals exploit (Olaniyi, 2023). The deteriorating state of roads, lighting, and public spaces hampers law enforcement efforts and diminishes community vigilance (Adebowale, 2024). As a result, residents experience heightened insecurity and reduced quality of life. This study aims to examine the specific infrastructural deficiencies that correlate with increased criminal activities and to propose measures for urban renewal that could mitigate these adverse effects (Olatunde, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the extent of infrastructural decay in Ibadan North-East.
To determine the relationship between decaying infrastructure and crime rates.
To recommend urban renewal strategies that can reduce criminal activities.
Research questions:
What is the current state of infrastructure in Ibadan North-East?
How does infrastructural decay correlate with crime incidence?
What urban renewal strategies can effectively mitigate crime?
Research Hypotheses:
Infrastructural decay is significantly correlated with higher crime rates.
Poor urban lighting and maintenance directly contribute to increased criminal activity.
Urban renewal initiatives will lead to a reduction in crime rates.
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the link between infrastructural decay and crime in Ibadan North-East. The findings will inform urban planning and public policy decisions, guiding investments in infrastructure to enhance public safety and improve community well-being. The research highlights the importance of coordinated urban renewal efforts for crime prevention (Olaniyi, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to analyzing the impact of infrastructural decay on crime rates in Ibadan North-East Local Government Area, focusing solely on local infrastructural and urban planning issues.
Definitions of terms:
Infrastructural Decay: The deterioration of physical structures and public facilities.
Crime Rates: The frequency of criminal incidents within a defined area.
Urban Renewal: The process of revitalizing deteriorated urban areas through investment and planning.
